This collage workshop is designed to take participants past the introductory collage level. We will be working with found objects such as pieces of metal, feathers, leaves and any other three dimensional objects of interest. The emphasis will be on how to embed or attach these objects so they become an integral part of the overall collage. We will be working on paper as well as canvases and aim for several larger works. Please bring extra materials for sharing. River Rock will supply some of the necessary materials in order to make participation easier.

- Open Studio with Jeremy Mayne
- July 16 - 20, 2012
- Tuition: $525 cdn.
- This workshop is designed to give participants a solid understanding of linear perspective, monotype and collage through interesting projects and demonstrations designed to meet individual needs. From basic perspective to advanced, whatever you wish to explore, this course will provide that freedom. We will also explore various types of collage and monotype within a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere. The goal of the course is to promote an environment in which participants feel at ease enough to explore and create to their full potential. Plenty of open studio time will allow you the freedom to develop your abilities and ideas further.

- Surface Explorations with Anthony Steffes
- July 30 - August 3, 2012
- Tuition: $495 cdn.
- This workshop begins daily with sequenced guided demonstrations that aim to illustrate the vast array of acrylic products and their potential. This will be done by using the products in many different ways in a series of small paintings. Products not marketed by local sources will also be demonstrated and made available. Layering, building textures, and mark-making are important parts of this process. Composition and design are inherent in the process. The demonstrations are aimed at accomplishing three goals: exposure to products, using these products in successful composition and design, and inspiring participants to effectively incorporate the information presented into their own style. The format of this workshop is highly structured with many projects and composition studies. However, it is completely acceptable for each participant to find a level of participation that is comfortable and meaningful. It would not be unacceptable to simply observe the whole process while you worked at incorporating the information into your on-going work.

- Open Studio Surface Explorations with Anthony Steffes
- August 6 - 10, 2012
- Tuition: $520 cdn.
- This workshop challenges participants with some experience and basic knowledge of acrylic products to fully explore the relationship between medium and artist. If the medium is fully controlled, the freshness and excitement of the art fades. If the medium is totally out of control, we have chaos. The interplay between artist and medium to communicate effectively is the goal of this process. Daily demonstrations which may include painting techniques, pouring, silk screening, thermofax transfers, layering, and others, are aimed to inspire participants to find new ways to use their mediums. Experiments with composition, mark-making, taking a single composition in three directions, and mono-printing, will be presented as ways of enriching surfaces. Consultations and individual critiques will focus on individual growth aimed at a better understanding of the power of each medium as it relates to our power as an artist.

- Open Studio – Advanced Analysis with Brian Atyeo
- September 24 - 28, 2012
- Tuition: $600 cdn.
- Five hard days of painting will probably appeal to artists who are currently working at that level [intermediate/advanced] or artists who are looking for the experience of intense painting. I will demonstrate on the Monday and Tuesday of the week, focusing on deconstruction vs. reconstruction, and how the Design Elements and Principles apply to this line of thinking. The remainder of my week will be spent with one on one discussion of options and daily group critiques. I will be encouraging artists towards the contemporary view of painting, with special attention given to paint surface and integrity.

- Experimental Painting with Ursula Reynolds
- October 12 - 14, 2012
- Tuition: $310 cdn.
- This workshop is about textures, composition and the layering process. Participants will experiment with creating different surface effects and enhancing their artwork with a wide range of techniques and materials. I will give daily demonstrations of these techniques and products. This week is all about exposure to products, surfaces and composition in sure-fire ways, so as to avoid problems as much as possible. Participants are encouraged to find a personal style in the process and share in finding new ways to stretch the limits of the materials in an experimental art environment. Limited amounts of the demonstrated materials will be supplied for the participants' use.
